Is this can okay for her kidneys?
Pick a can
Choose a brand, then a flavor.
Every can lands somewhere on the dial. Lower is gentler on old kidneys.
How to read the dial
The needle points to a food's phosphorus on a dry-matter basis — the number kidney-cat guides sort by. Lower is better for an older cat.
Some flavors carry a note that the company only provided minimums — for those, the true phosphorus may run higher than the needle shows.
Can't find a food? Add it
Some brands (Applaws, most store brands, Blue Buffalo's everyday lines, most Friskies flavors) never hand over full analyses, so no list has them. Two ways in:
1. Ask the company. Most will email the phosphorus number if asked. Type it in below.
2. Work it out from the can. Every label lists a guaranteed analysis. Enter its phosphorus and moisture and this converts to dry matter:
Label says phosphorus (min) % … and moisture (max) % …
Label values are a legal floor, not a recipe — treat the result as "at least this much."
Where the numbers come from
The list is the full US canned-food table from Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline CKD (felinecrf.org) — 1,142 foods, each confirmed in writing by the maker and dated. The page was last updated November 2022; each entry shows when its number was obtained.
Honest caveats, in order: recipes drift over time, so an older date deserves less trust; entries marked as minimums may truly sit higher; and brands that are missing are missing because they declined to disclose — not because nobody asked. Confirm the current number with the company before any food becomes the everyday bowl.
Kidney-support and prescription foods are included and labeled. Raw entries are listed too, though Tanya's guide advises against raw diets for CKD cats.
A shortlist helper, not a diagnosis. For a 21-year-old cat, phosphorus targets and phosphate binders are a conversation with Phoebe's vet.
